How to Select a Preaction Fire Sprinkler Valve Assembly

A practical guide to valve size, system operation and the information needed before ordering.

Choosing a preaction valve assembly begins with the system design, not simply the pipe size. The designer or contractor must know how the system is intended to operate, which releasing method is specified and what supervisory air arrangement will be used.

Each READY-TRIM™ preaction fire sprinkler valve arrives with its essential trim components already assembled. It gives the installer a coordinated valve package, but it must still be selected to match the approved plans, specifications and releasing-system requirements for the project.

Confirm the Required Valve Size

READY-TRIM™ is available in 2-, 3-, 4- and 6-inch sizes. The required size should come from the hydraulic design and approved project documents; it should not be selected by estimating from the protected area alone.

Identify the Preaction Configuration

The configuration determines what conditions must occur before the valve opens. READY-TRIM™ is available in these arrangements:

• Single Interlock
• Double Interlock Electric/Electric
• Double Interlock Electric/Pneumatic

Because the operating sequence differs by configuration, the selection should match the project’s approved sequence of operations and detection requirements.

Review the Supporting System Requirements

Confirm the releasing controls, supervisory air or nitrogen supply, electrical requirements and any optional devices identified in the specifications. These supporting components must work with the selected valve arrangement even when they are supplied separately.
