NFPA 25-2020
CHAPTER 14 -INTERNAL PIPING CONDITION

Do your sprinkler systems look like THIS inside?

Then you haven’t been doing the REQUIRED internal inspections!

Many people do not realize that NFPA 25-2020, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems – Chapter 14 REQUIRES periodic inspection of the internal condition of fire sprinkler piping. The exterior of the pipe may look great, but the interior could be a problem. Here’s a few facts about complying with these requirements.

    1. Chapter 14 contains the minimum REQUIREMENTS for conducting investigations of internal piping condition for possible sources of material that could cause pipe blockage or internal corrosion.
    2. All types of water-based systems, including wet-pipe, dry-pipe, preaction, and deluge sprinklers, REQUIRE periodic internal investigation.
    3. Internal pipe assessments are REQUIRED to be be routine, scheduled, and part of the normal inspection and maintenance procedures for these systems.
    4. The minimum interval for conducting these assessments is 5 years. (Consult Chapter 14 for more detailed information about assessment interval.)
    5. If sufficient material is found to obstruct the pipe or the sprinklers, then an obstruction investigation must be performed.
    6. “Non-destructive” examination methods, such as video, x-ray, or ultrasonic, are permitted.
    7. The most commonly found problems are:
           •  Rust
           •  Mud or soil
           •  Stones or gravel
           •  Biologicals (such as shellfish)
           •  MIC (Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion)
    8. These internal pipe assessments do NOT need to be extensive, time consuming, or costly, but they are REQUIRED!

Corrosion requires the presence of three things: iron, water, and oxygen. The UNITED Fire Systems NITROGEN-PAC replaces the oxygen in your sprinkler system with 98% nitrogen. Removing oxygen from your sprinkler system makes corrosion a thing of the past. Our nitrogen generator technology can extend the lifetime of your preaction or dry-pipe sprinkler system piping by up to 10 times! Click here to read more about nitrogen corrosion prevention.
